Everyone can build.
Almost nobody can grow.

The premise

The hard part was always somewhere else.

We often say that building used to be hard and that new tools have made it easy. The truth is simpler: building was never the hard part. It only felt that way, because for twenty years we built - very well - what somebody else had already chosen.

In outsourcing and out-tasking the market arrived pre-selected: the client, the price, the roadmap and the priorities came with the brief. We became excellent at the execution half. That is a real competence, and few regions have it. The other half was simply never asked of us.

That is not a criticism, it is a consequence: you do not develop a competence nobody asks you for. And now, when more and more of us want products of our own, that is exactly the competence we are missing.

“A good product without distribution is an expensive hobby.”

Startups in the region do not die because they built badly - usually they built very well. They die because nobody found out, nobody paid enough, or the money ran out before anybody found out.

The context

Four things that matter right now

Where growth is won, and where it is lost.

01

The product was never a moat

What you build, your competitor also builds. The difference has always been the speed at which you learn from customers - and in outsourcing you rarely reached them.

02

Distribution is the real barrier

Attention is the scarce resource, not code. Whoever reaches the customer first wins, even if their product is second on features.

03

Capital is more selective

Investors no longer buy vision. They ask for traction, unit economics and a founder who knows their numbers without looking at a laptop.

04

Good people have options

In Sibiu you compete for talent with corporations that pay more and ask less. You cannot win on salary - you have to win on something else.

The room

Five profiles, the same road seen from different points

Sibiu hosts the day, it is not the subject of it. Founders from across the Centru region - Sibiu, Brașov, Alba, Mureș, Covasna and Harghita. Every session has two levels: one for whoever is looking for their first ten customers, one for whoever already manages fifty people.

01

The services company founder

10–100 people · project revenue · no product of their own

Has been looking towards a product of their own for years, but services consume exactly the people the product would need.

“How do I start a product without killing the business that keeps me alive?”

02

The pre-product founder

An idea, a prototype, maybe first users · zero revenue

Believes in the problem they are solving, but has no proof yet that it exists outside their own head.

“Does anyone actually have this problem - or does it just seem that way to me?”

03

The scale-up founder

10–50 people · recurring revenue · growth has plateaued

What worked up to ten people no longer works at forty, and the funding question can no longer be postponed.

“What exactly broke, that we grow harder than we did two years ago?”

04

The employee who wants to build

Senior in a corporation or a services firm · has not jumped yet

Has the technical competence, the idea and the first potential customer in mind. Has no realistic picture of the first twelve months.

“What exactly do I risk if I take the step - and what do I risk if I do not?”

05

The pupil or student who wants to start

16–24 years old · still in school or at a first job

Has curiosity and time - two things the founders in the room no longer have. All that is missing is a picture of the road.

“What does this road actually look like, before I choose it?”

Networking

Opportunity for startups

8 startups. 3 days. Zero cost.

Most early-stage startups cannot afford a booth at an event the size of Innovation Week. Those are exactly the startups with the most to gain from exposure in front of thousands of visitors, companies and investors.

Sibiu Startup Hub covers the full cost of eight physical booths in the exhibition area, on 2, 3 and 4 November 2026. A booth is for meeting people, not for decorating a table — so the application asks what visitors will actually see, and who specifically you want to meet.

  • Physical booth in the main exhibition area, at no cost
  • Introductions arranged in advance, from the ask in your application
  • An optional twenty-minute visit from a mentor matched to your blocker
  • Places reserved for startups from outside Sibiu county
How the eight are chosen
30%

Something to show

A demo, prototype or product a visitor can look at, touch or try.

25%

Can we actually help?

Is the ask specific enough that we could line up two real introductions before the day? A vague ask is an unfillable one.

25%

Clarity of problem and customer

A named, narrow segment and a real scenario. Not polish — clarity. Rough and specific beats smooth and general.

20%

Will you work the floor?

Staffing plan, passes requested, what you are bringing. The signal that you intend to use the day rather than occupy it.

Selected startups automatically enter the pool from which the participants of #2 · The Teardown and the startup asking for funding in #5 · The Funding Room are chosen.

The stage

Operators, not professional speakers

Everyone on this stage built something real - revenue, customers, employees or an exit behind them, not just a position and a title. They give numbers, percentages, prices and durations. And they accept contradiction.

#1

The Expensive Lessons

Four founders who went through expensive lessons - a company lost, or a month away from it.

#2

The Teardown

A jury of three operators - product, technology and B2B sales - and three startups that accept being dismantled live.

#3

Funding Solutions

Four different routes to money, plus a moderator - local and regional funds, European funds, private capital, and a corporate startup programme.

#4

Marketing × Sales

Two marketers and two sales leaders, from companies of different sizes - ideally, a pair from the same firm.

#5

The Funding Room

An investment fund, an active business angel, a European funds specialist and a profitable founder with no funding. Plus the startup asking for the money.

#6

The People Problem

A founder and their first employee, both willing to speak honestly, in front of each other.

#7

After Growth

A founder who sold, one who refused, one who moved from services to product, and a buyer or investor.

The week continues

4 November leads straight into the hackathon.

What is said on 4 November is the difference between a nice project and one somebody would actually buy. Whoever sits through these sessions understands earlier than the rest that the problem is not creation, it is distribution.

Attending

The founders’ day is free to attend.

One registration covers all five conference days - name, phone, email and the days you are coming.
